Tata and Airbus will soon manufacture military aircraft in Gujarat. The state has closed a massive deal and the cost of the project is 22,000 crore rupees or 2.66 billion dollars.

Minister of Defense Dr. Ajay Kumar said that this is the first project of its kind where a military aircraft will be manufactured by a private company in the country. The total cost of the project is Rs 21,935 crore. Aircraft can also be used for civilian purposes.

Tata-Airbus Plan: Significance

  1. The Tata-Airbus plan is seen as a notable gain for the prime minister’s “Make-In-India” campaign to reduce the country’s dependence on the purchase of military hardware and equipment.
  2. PM Modi to inaugurate manufacturing plant in Vadodara. New projects promise thousands of jobs.
  3. The project is the only one of its kind where a military aircraft will be manufactured in India by a private company.
  4. The aircraft will also strengthen the logistics capabilities of the IAF.

Tata-Airbus plan: Key details

  1. Gujarat beat Maharashtra to secure a $19.5 billion investment in September 2022 that will see semiconductors developed by a joint venture between Vedanta Ltd and Taiwan’s Foxconn.
  2. The power plants will be built near Ahmedabad with substantial electricity subsidies and other incentives provided by the state and are expected to create more than 100,000 jobs.
  3. The center last month gave the green light to the purchase of 56 commercial aircraft from Airbus.
  4. 16 aircraft will be provided in as-departure condition and 40 will be manufactured in India.
  5. The first 16 flight-ready aircraft are due to be received between September 2023 and August 2025.
  6. The first aircraft manufactured in Gujarat is expected in September 2026.
  7. The new C-295 transport aircraft may even outperform the Indian Air Force’s aging Avro aircraft.

Background

The aircraft consists of rear ramp doors for rapid response and troop and cargo dropouts. Short take-off/landing from semi-prepared surfaces is another of its features.
